The Connections Online Art Gallery is here to exhibit your personal works of art -- both visual and literary. It is made possible through the generosity of the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation as a way to creatively express the complex feelings we've all experienced following the September 11 terrorist attacks.

At ArtPRIDE we know that when times get tough, people turn to the arts. We hope you will use this gallery as a way to connect to others, express what cannot be easily be spoken, memorialize lost lives, and celebrate freedom, diversity and pride.

To upload your work, complete the linked form, following the guidelines available by clicking on the Help button.

Once you've placed your work into the gallery, please use the card feature to share it with friends and family and spread the word about Connections. We hope you will return often to participate and watch this project evolve over time. We welcome your feedback. Please email us at artpride@artpridenj.com.

10/2000 - I was intrigued by the contrast between the wax-like vulnerability of the stacks/towers, and the sharp metallic hardness of the three sinister objects threatening from above. The symbolism that strikes me now is obvious, and frightening. I'll never know what inspired me to do this, but I remembered that I had drawn it, and it has a special meaning to me now.

It has been said that, “trees are the earth’s endless effort to speak to the listening heaven”. I’ve been painting trees (“Solitaire Series”) since the mid 90’s, a body of work that continues to evolve and one which fascinates every inch of my being. From my perspective trees represent the living spirituality of our earth. To view additional work, please visit: www.artemosaique.com

Seaside Park   Ocean County

I painted this image, World Trade Flowers in February 2000. It’s the first in a series of “floralscapes” I am still creating. What originally was solely a painting symbolizing New York's vibrancy and eclectic energy, on September 11, 2001, took on an eerily prophetic quality. Rather than a commemoration of a tragedy, I wish this piece’s message now to be one of strength, of our country blossoming anew and being even more beautiful, spectacular and breath taking than ever.

Raku is an ancient firing method of the orient. What makes this technique unique is that the pieces are removed from the kiln while white hot (approx. 1600 degrees F.) and then placed in a bin full of combustibles. The temperature shock creates the crackled effect in the glaze, and the black smoke fills the cracks to make interesting and unexpected geographic patterns. The ideaograph for Raku means; peace, contentment, pleasure and happiness.

Wall   Monmouth County

This image references the civil unrest in Ireland and the occupation by British forces. Ireland is often represented using romantic themes such as the rolling landscape, cottages and the notion of contentment with ones place. I wanted to take one of these themes - Ireland personified as Mother - and use it to suggest the backdrop of a country quietly at war.

Weehawken   Hudson County

I began this painting in August, 2001 and finished it soon after 9/11. The painting overlays the department store logo onto a wintry suburban cul de sac. What began as a metaphor for sprawl and consumerism soon seemed more like a target for international terror and defiance. Its new sinister connotations made it difficult to complete, after watching the second plane hit from the end of my street. I wanted only to paint something happy with bright colors.

This piece began as a black & white photo of a model of the Statue of Liberty (actually a 18" lawn sprinkler) that I scanned and manipulated in PhotoShop 6. I changed the date on the document in her hand to 9/11/01 and added color and other touches.

This is a digital camera shot that I manipulated in Photoshop. I thought the school bus added an interesting touch; with the tilted camera angle and placement in the composition, it looks like it's careening wildly down the road. The tire fence is a nice focal point especially with the perspective it creates. I shot with a Canon 10D and then created the psychedelic effect and did some other editing in Photoshop 7.

I have "rebuilt" the World Trade Center in exact detail but downsized to make it available to the public as a memorial. I have given much thought to the particular details of each part and of each section--so as to reverently commemorate those who fell victim in our nation's "Second Day of Infamy" and to also create the artistic ambience so necessary to enhance the reflective mood desired for each visitor to this hallowed site.

Joanie San Chirico is a full time studio artist with an extensive exhibition record. Her work is held in numerous public and private collections. She integrates her love of the stitch with her fascination with the past. She’s intrigued by the combination of old and new, ancient and the unknown. The objective is to make modern abstract art using ancient imagery. The intention is to use this juxtaposition of ancient/modern to reflect on the past in an attempt to make sense of the future.
