Jeffrey K. Smith
Biography

Jeffrey K. Smith is Professor of Educational Psychology at Rutgers University, and Head of the Office of Research and Evaluation at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. He has been with Rutgers since 1976 and has served as Chair of the Department of Educational Psychology and Associate Dean of the Graduate School of Education. With the Metropolitan since 1988, Professor Smith received his Bachelors degree from Princeton University in 1972 and his Ph.D. in Measurement, Evaluation, and Statistical Analysis from the University of Chicago in 1977. His areas of research include learning in museums, psychological factors that influence test performance, and the psychology of aesthetics. Professor Smith has written or edited four books, written over 50 journal articles, and made over 100 presentations at conferences and symposia. He has served as a consultant to over twenty museums including the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum, the American Museum of Natural History, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Dr. Smith developed the audience surveys used in the first two economic activity studies of the arts sponsored by the NJ State Council on the Arts and the South Jersey Cultural Alliance (1996) and sponsored by the NJSCA and the ArtPRIDE NJ Foundation (2000).
